Vienna gets a Satoshi Nakamoto statue

On 14 October 2026 we unveil a sculpture of Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous creator of Bitcoin, in Viertel Zwei. The stainless steel figure is by Satoshi Gallery, the project of Italian artist Valentina Picozzi, and part of “21 Nodes”, a global art project that links Satoshi statues in notable places around the world.
The celebration starts on Wednesday, 14 October, at 5 pm at the head of the lake next to the OMV building Hoch Zwei in Vienna’s 2nd district. It is hosted by Der Fil (Philipp Horwath) and also marks 15 years of Bitcoin Austria.
Getting there and all details: Unveiling of the Satoshi Statue
A monument without heroes
Satoshi Nakamoto published the Bitcoin white paper on 31 October 2008, launched the network in January 2009 and then stepped away. Who is behind the name remains unknown.
Since then nobody has been in charge of Bitcoin. The network runs because many people run their own nodes, verify payments and develop the software. That is why the community says: “We are all Satoshi.”
The sculpture turns that idea into steel. It shows a programmer seated at a laptop, built from 61 mirror-polished stainless steel profiles on a base of Corten steel. From the side the figure is plain to see; from the front it almost disappears. Stand behind the sculpture and you become part of the figure, true to “We are all Satoshi”.
Satoshi Gallery and “21 Nodes”
Satoshi Gallery began as a street art project by Valentina Picozzi, who has worked with Bitcoin since 2012. With “21 Nodes” Satoshi Gallery plans 21 Satoshi statues in 21 countries. Each statue is a physical node in a worldwide network, meant to connect people, places and ideas.
The first statue was unveiled in Lugano in October 2024. In New York a Satoshi statue stands in the museum of the New York Stock Exchange, in Tokyo outside the Tokyo Bitcoin Base. Others stand in Hanoi and in El Zonte, El Salvador, the town known as “Bitcoin Beach”, among other places. Vienna now gives “21 Nodes” a location in Austria.
Why Vienna
The Austrian School of Economics began in Vienna. Carl Menger described here how money emerges from exchange, without any state decree. Friedrich A. von Hayek later wrote about competition between currencies.
Austria’s Bitcoin community is almost as old as Bitcoin itself: we held our first meetup in Vienna in July 2011. Today independent Bitcoin meetups across Austria bring people together.
Carried by many
We chose not to let a single large sponsor pay for the statue. We started a fundraiser in December 2025 and closed it in August 2026. More than 120 individuals donated. Further donations go into a fund for the statue’s care, insurance and repairs.
Bitpanda, whose office is right next door, is the Genesis sponsor. Incrementum, Enzinger Steuerberatung, Bitkern, Was Bitcoin bringt, Stadler Partner Rechtsanwälte, Bitcredit, Validvent and Viertel Zwei also gave their support.
Visiting
The statue stands at the head of the lake next to the OMV building Hoch Zwei and is open to the public at all times from the unveiling on. The nearest underground station is Krieau (U2). Photos and more information: Satoshi statue
