NÖN: The Eternal Lure of Maximum Returns (2021)

Two Bitcoiners featured are Dominik Myczkowski from Melk and Anita from St. Pölten. In a converted warehouse along the Traisen river, Myczkowski “mined,” that is, computed, the cryptocurrency using high-performance computers. It was a data center for the production and processing of Bitcoin transactions. The electricity came from a small hydropower plant.

“Ecologically sound, unlike certain miners in China who run their operations on coal-generated power,” says Myczkowski. Bitcoin data centers consume 90 terawatt-hours of electricity worldwide per year, more than Switzerland or New Zealand. Too much for some scientists and climate activists, who are calling urgently for regulation.

“It is the people’s money, without excessive bureaucracy.” — Anita

The price doesn’t interest Anita. “I don’t invest in Bitcoin to get rich.” Bitcoin is open, borderless, and transparent money, especially for people who don’t have proper access to a bank account, says Anita.

“A luxury for us, but a necessity for the rest of the world.” It is the people’s money, without excessive bureaucracy. Thanks to its decentralized nature, Bitcoin works without intermediaries like banks or lawyers. And it thereby also protects privacy.

Anita recommends a cautious entry into the “internet of money” while at the same time making sure to “get informed” in order to understand Bitcoin.
