2. Less Dependence on Payment Providers
With direct receipt, donations go into your own wallet. A payment provider is not required. You decide how to handle custody, conversion, and withdrawals. This option can be relevant for organisations operating internationally or in politically sensitive areas.
3. What Donors Can Verify
Publishing an on-chain address lets donors follow payments and the balance of that address, for example for a specific campaign. It shows neither the organisation’s total assets nor its Lightning payments. Project reports add context and show what the funds helped achieve.
Consider the balance between transparency and privacy: public transactions may also reveal information about donors and business partners.

Running your own donation system

The Austrian Ministry of Finance’s income tax guidelines classify bitcoin donations as donations in kind. Deductibility depends in part on the donor and recipient. Bitcoin Austria advocates for equal tax treatment of Bitcoin and euro donations.
